Confessional Standards

Introduction to the Confessional Standards

Following the signing of the National Covenant of 1638 Scotland’s Magistrate and Church were established on sound biblical principle.

With the start of the English Civil war England Scotland and Wales entered into a Solemn League and Covenant in 1643 for the broadening of the Church State establishment to include all three nations.

Shortly thereafter the most immanent and godly men of those nations gathered together in the Jerusalem Chamber at Westminster Abbey in order to formulate an appropriate Confession and other subsidiary standards to support the new Constitutional arrangement. The production of these standards represent the Reformations high water mark of doctrinal devotional and practical application of the scriptures.

Full subscription to the Westminster Confession of Faith is required by the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Rev. Hugh Cartwright explains and defends this principle in the article The Westminster Confession of Faith – Its Usefulness for the Church.
